There is much to love about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles now. IDW has done a great job re-launching the book and has decided to launch a micro-series as well dedicated to each pivotal character of the TMNT universe. Paul Allor is now taking on the task of bringing the rebel of a robot in Fugitoid to the micro-series and it sounds like it’ll be a good one.

We spend some time discussing the issue along with his other work involved with Clockwork and moderating book clubs and workshops with Comics Experience.

CBF Quick Picks #85 – American Vampire #18

Scott Snyder and Rafael Albuquerque bring us the conclusion of Ghost War in American Vampire #18. And it’s a fine one, as we see the end of the Skinner Sweet saga (or so it seems) and a new direction that would keep this series going into new period pieces. It’s great to see Snyder committed to this story even with his impending DC re-launch books on the horizon.

IDW brings back an 80’s classic in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1. The darker tone is apparent to go with the way the original indie comic was like. And it’s set up some interesting stories and different takes on the popular characters.

And lastly, it’s back to the Age of Apocalypse with Uncanny X-Force #13. The team’s romp in this universe to retrieve the Life Seed for Archangel has been a nostalgic one, though how it ends makes us think that Archangel might not be so receptive to it. More zany fun from the mind of Rick Remender.

Furious Five To Watch For – 08.24.11

Wednesday, August 24th, 2011

Yup, I found five books this week to watch for. We’re a week away from the dawning of a new era in the DC land and we see more of the old era closing this week. But there’s one book this week that’s got me all giddy and wanting to break out my action figures:

5) Batman Inc #8
Hey, remember this book? I’ve been waiting to hear about this “Interworld” that was first touched upon when Bruce Wayne returned to the DCU. There’s also speculation that this could tie into what makes Oracle take back the reigns of Batgirl soon. Who knows any way? It’s Grant Morrison and that’s all you need to know.

4) Uncanny X-Force #13
The last issue threw us for a loop with AoA Wolverine taking over where Apocalypse left off. We’re also seeing another love triangle form, as Psylocke debates if she really is still in love with Archangel, the man the team has to kill to save him, or if she has it in for Fantomex. This kind of storytelling harkens back to the good old X-Men days that one will come to respect.

3) Batman Gates of Gotham #5
Despite its hiccups on pacing and art, you can’t help but want to see how Gotham’s history will tie into the Architect that is trying to wipe out the founding families of Gotham. If this is going to be anything like what Scott Snyder is planning to do on his upcoming Batman run, I’m all for it.

2) American Vampire #18
It’s the conclusion to Ghost War with the battle of the ages – Skinner Sweet vs. Pearl Jones. How the heck Snyder’s going to top this when this story arc is all over is beyond me.

1) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1
Come on. Really. It’s the freaking turtles with Kevin Eastman back on the book. If Casey Jones doesn’t whack some goons with a golf club this issue, I’ll riot.
