Was there ever any doubt?
Uncanny X-Force #18 concludes one of the best X-tales I’ve read in quite some time. It speaks well to the talent that is Rick Remender and Jerome Opena for ending this arc in style. Whether you like your action or like your character moments, this one has it all. How the team tops this going into 2012 is going to be a sight to see.
Scott Snyder and Scott Tuft continue to bring the creepiness in Severed #5. You all know what’s going to happen – we’re just biting our nails waiting to see when that payoff will come into play. The characters and set pieces is what makes this mini-series stand out.
And finally, can we just declare J.H. Williams III the master of his domain? Batwoman #4 is a marvel to look at just like the previous three issues. It say something when DC is willing to put all of their ads in the back of just this book.
CBF Quick Picks #86 : The New DCU Has Arrived
The time has come, folks. On August 31st, the new DCU is in full swing and Justice League #1 is the one kicking things off. This was definitely a labor of love put together by Geoff Johns and Jim Lee. They didn’t have to do this book at all, but they chose to. And while it’s a slow burn of an issue rather than epic battle sequences, it sets the stage for a great and new look into what should be the premier title of DC that it hasn’t been the last 10 years.
Marvel didn’t want me left hanging dry that week though. Rick Remender put out another stellar effort in Uncanny X-Force #14 in the continuing Dark Angel saga that sees Archangel assume the mantle of Apocalypse. Jerome Opena makes his way back to art duties, which improves the book tenfold (as if it needed that already). Absolutely the best X-book on the market and am hoping that trend continues for the foreseeable future.

We’re mere hours away from the behemoth that is called New York Comic Con, but that doesn’t stop me from talking this week’s books.
This week, Uncanny X-Force #1 really made me believe a second iteration of X-Force could work. This could have fallen flat on its face putting Wolverine and Deadpool in another book, but it doesn’t and you have the capable tandem of Rick Remender and Jerome Opena to thank for that. Good mix of humor, banter, action, and plot that harkens back to the early 90′s X-Men days.
Not to be outshined, American Vampire #7 continues its epic run from Scott Snyder and Rafael Albuquerque in 1930′s Las Vegas. The action take a break this issue, but it leaves room for getting to know new characters and sets up new plots for recurring ones.
And lastly, Brightest Day #11 rears its Black Lantern-infested head back into the picture. Call it Blackest Night Volume 2 if you want – I’m on board for what seems to be this new war of the light specifically involving Black and White Lanterns. Aquaman and Aqualad’s story though is developing really well as we come to learn more about the new kid’s past and powers. More fanboy goodness from the likes of Johns and Tomasi.
