CBF Quick Picks #94 : Penguin – Pain & Prejudice #1

Unfortunately, due to time constraints and not wanting to delay the scheduling of future Quick Picks shows, there won’t be a part 2 to week 4 of the new DCU. That being said, you should go pick up I, Vampire and Voodoo.

I’m a sucker for character studies in comics. The ones for Magneto and Red Skull come to mind when I think of great character pieces. Put Penguin – Pain & Prejudice #1 up there as a great start to another great piece. This goes beyond what Tim Burton did to introduce this sympathetic villain. While it makes me wonder if there’s anything more left to do in the next four issues, I can’t help but be in awe of what was accomplished here.

Not to be outdone, Huntress #1 brought another new mini-series to light, as the titular character flies to Italy to take out sex traffickers. The art is so fluid to look at during the action sequences. And Paul Levitz does justice to the character he had created.

OMAC #2 brings the Jack Kirby fun back for another round. You know what to expect from Keith Giffen, but give props to Dan Didio for proving us wrong about his writing chops. Just a fun ride to go through with this series.

CBF Quick Picks #25 : E3 and Birds of Prey #2

Light week for books, but not light on content. For video gamers like me, this was our week what with the E3 conference coming and going. The comic book video game content was pretty impressive too even with Arkham Asylum 2 a no-show this year. It’s a definite improvement when you consider the history of comic book games.

Despite the low amount of books, it was the Birds of Prey that stood out from the pack. Gail Simone has hit her stride these last two weeks with Secret Six taking the prize last week. She has a great affinity for these characters and takes them down really dark down paths and sees what they can make of them. Having a talented artist like Ed Benes certainly helps to express the dark mood too.

Enjoy the show and enjoy the game trailers!

CBF Quick Picks #20: DC Rules The Universe

There was too much going on in DC land to limit this to one or two books to Quick Picks this week. As much as Return of Bruce Wayne deserved a good amount of hype, I was thoroughly impressed by a bunch of DC offerings. DC is hot right now and I’m glad they’re continuing to build other franchises beyond the Batman and Green Lantern names.

This is not to say that Marvel didn’t have a good week too – just that DC did things one better. Marvel wrapped up Siege and officially began their march into Heroic Age. It was nice that they finally wrapped up all those threads, but my review here on iFanboy can give you some insight as to why I felt it could have done a whole lot more.
