Through all the Bruce Wayne hoopla that came out last week, it says something when Geoff Johns and Doug Mahnke can still come out and remind us that Green Lantern is still up there in the upper echelon of top-tier DC superhero books. The book had hit a bit of a chaotic run after Blackest Night ended, but that all came to a head when the Flash guest-starred and slowed things down to question Hal Jordan as to his actions in helping the other Corps. The last page made my jaw drop and showed me there’s still more to this New Guardians arc to show.

This is not to say that Batman was a slouch. The Batman : The Return one-shot kicked things off with Bruce Wayne officially getting back into the swing of things, assigning new roles to his companions (Internet 3.0 for Oracle?), and packing up for his international trip to find Bat-Mite. Oh, wait – you mean my pitch for that storyline didn’t go through? Ah well, maybe next year.

Speaking of international trips, how about Batman Incorporated? Grant Morrison moves the Bat franchise into a new, quirky direction as Bruce looks to introduce the Japanese Batman to the land of Tokyo. Catwoman is along for the ride too and it brings us witty interaction between the on and off again lovers. I still find it amazing though that Morrison continues to find really oddball characters of Batman lore (Lord Death Man?) and make them menacing.

And to finish off the Batman tour, I bring you Brightest Day #14. Anybody who read the previous issue knew that we’d once again get to test Batman’s costume with another Lantern ring. The real story though involved Deadman taking center stage in his quest to find the chosen one of the White Lantern Corps. Great personal piece on Deadman’s past and how it relates to what his current journey is about. Also a good issue to showcase Ivan Reis at his best.

Give us your thoughts on the state of the Batman books and anything else that tickles your fancy. Enjoy your books!
