DC’s latest animated DVD, Batman: Under the Red Hood, came out this past Tuesday and Comic Book Fury has got your back in reviewing it. Definitely one of the best animated DVD offerings Bruce Timm and team have brought out since they started doing these a couple of years ago (I’m still debating as to if this is better than Wonder Woman). Plotting, pacing, voice acting, animation, action sequences – this one has all of that. Plus you get the Jonah Hex we should have had in the live action movie and a nice peek at the next DVD.

Enjoy the show and give us your feedback on the flick too!

In this week’s episode, I touch upon a little bit of The Sixth Gun #2, a book from Oni Press that came out last week but was only able to get recently. This book peeked my interest back on Free Comic Book Day and I looked forward to the day they’d continue the Wild West saga of this mysterious gun.

From there, we get into the slim pickings of a week in books what with Comic Con here in full force. Even so, Brightest Day took the prize by putting focus back on its strong sub-plots (No Hawkman!) and teasing some revelations to come. I even give props to Johns and Tomasi for getting me interested in Firestorm again. This makes it all a great set-up for what’s to come with the big reveal behind the purpose of these characters’ resurrections in issue 7.

Enjoy the show!

We’re days away from San Diego (the comic world in general, not us – we’re glued to our desks playing Pokemon) and I felt it good to review what the 1st half of 2010 brought to us from the lands of Marvel and DC. This site has devoted a lot to DC books as of late, but there are still a few good Marvel showings that came out that weren’t Avenger-related. That being said, we really felt DC gave a lot to the readers from both its superhero and Vertigo imprints.

Enjoy the show and all the best to those attending San Diego this year!

Two weeks of books to catch up on, folks. I breeze through last week first to give you the hands-down pick in Scarlet #1. Good to see Bendis back in the creator-owned realm after being in Avenger land for so long. Bringing back his Daredevil artist cohort in Alex Maleev is always a welcome treat too.

From there, a swarm of excellent books came out this week, making it very difficult to establish a Quick Pick. In the end, I gave it to the latest chapter in Marvel’s summer cosmic adventure, Thanos Imperative. Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning (or DnA as the interwebz is calling them) continue to bring epic material to their takes on the Marvel cosmic heroes and villains that fight in their own little corner of the universe. The only thing that stinks is not having monthly series like Nova and Guardians of the Galaxy along for the ride (they’re on hold for this mini-series) because there is just too much to enjoy with these characters.

Enjoy the show and keep a lookout for more cool stuff soon on CBF!

You can check out Thanos Imperative #2 right here.

This week, I sing the praises of Invincible Ultimate Collection 5 first and salute the stellar run Robert Kirkman and Ryan Ottley are having. Then I make haste and talk about a new arc going on in Action Comics led by Paul Cornell – a name I wish I knew well during his Marvel days writing Captain Britain and MI:13 in the midst of Secret Invasion. It’s a good start and makes Luthor the center of attention in the long-running Superman book. We were wondering when we’d get the follow-up to Luthor’s tenure as an Orange Lantern and it pays off well as Luthor obsesses over the power he once had.

Enjoy the show and have a safe 4th!

Despite heavy competition from Return of Bruce Wayne and surprisingly Green Arrow, I have to give this week’s Quick Pick to the continuing adventures of Scott Snyder and Stephen King’s imaginative take on the vampire mythology. I’m running out of words to say about this series, so let’s just say it’s off-the-wall fun and carries a good amount of emotional depth to it. King here finally seems to come into his own in his back-up tale after 3 issues of him adjusting to writing in this medium. We’re getting just enough about Skinner Sweet and what his new breed of vampire brings to the table and yet not enough that we get to keep coming back for more.

Download audio file (comicbookfury_quickpicks_061810.mp3) Light week for books, but not light on content. For video gamers like me, this was our week what with the E3 conference coming and going. The comic book video game content was pretty impressive too even with Arkham Asylum 2 a no-show this year. Light week for books, but not light on content. For video gamers like me, this was our week what with the E3 conference coming and going. The comic book video game content was pretty impressive too even with Arkham Asylum 2 a no-show this year. It’s a definite improvement when you consider the history of comic book games.

Despite the low amount of books, it was the Birds of Prey that stood out from the pack. Gail Simone has hit her stride these last two weeks with Secret Six taking the prize last week. She has a great affinity for these characters and takes them down really dark down paths and sees what they can make of them. Having a talented artist like Ed Benes certainly helps to express the dark mood too.

Enjoy the show and enjoy the game trailers!

With the majority of comic book events taking a break this week, it was good to spend some time talking about some sleeper hits under most people’s radars. I’ve enjoyed the heck out of Stephanie Brown’s take as Batgirl and has made me really appreciate her growth as a character since her days as the Spoiler. Having Oracle along for the ride doesn’t hurt either.

But what really takes the cake is what Gail Simone has been bringing to the Secret Six. Unbelievably brutal in both its characterization and in its violence, it makes you laugh and yet cringe at the same time at this rag-tag band of anti-heroes and villains (who really are quite charming and makes you want to go out to a picnic and hold hands with them). As of late, this has been the book about Catman and it has made him one of the more compelling characters as of late for DC. Hit the Play button and you’ll know why.
